Have you Evered wondered why certain people always achieve?
That one athlete that is always in the championship game?
That one actor that is always in the blockbusters?
That wealth person that always seems to get richer & richer?
That is because they decided to stop playing the role and they be came the character,
Let me explain what I mean.
In the movie the pursuit of happiness with Will Smith there is a 20 sec clip where him and his son are homeless and forced to sleep in a public bathroom for the whole night. Can you imagine that?
Well neither could Will Smith.
That is why he actually went back to that same bathroom and had Chris Gardener (whom the movie is based on) describe the experience.
After doing so Chris Gardener said he had to leave due to the painful emotion that it brought back.
Yet that still wasn’t enough for Will Smith.
He asked Chris to leave him there overnight just so he could feel what it was really like to experience that moment.
Think about that.
Will Smith was willing to the spend the night in a dirty, cold, 6×6 public bathroom for a 20 second shot (2:05) in a 2 hour long movie.
That is becoming the character.
Another example would be Jamie Fox when he played in the movie Ray(in which he won an Academy Award for).
As he studied ray. He went so much further than another actor would be willing to go.So much so that he had his eyes typed shut for 16 hours a day! When the average actor would have worn sunglasses and simply read their lines from prompter. Jamie Fox became the character.
He said it was uncomfortable. He said it was one of the most excruciating things he had ever done. Yet when he began to become weak Jamie Fox said he just thought about how Ray had to live like that all day every day. The result?
Quincy Jones said ” I have known the Ray Charles for 57 years, He is like a part of my soul. Yet when I saw him with the late great Ray Charles Robinson I couldn’t tell them apart.”
Ray Charles Robinson JR. said ” It was so emotional for me as I watched him because he was like a mirror image of my dad”
Ladies and Gentlemen that is becoming the character.
Why do I bring this up?
Well on the road too our dreams and other things I know at times I can get caught up in the how too’s of it all.
In the Small mundane unimportant nuts and bolts of where I want to go.
Yet that seems to matter the least and it is when I heard this analogy that it made me think of an old philosophy that was planted in my mind many years ago.
“On the path to success what you get is not as important as who you become”
Jim Rohn
So in ending this post I encourage you to ask yourself two questions,
In chasing my dreams, when I envision myself being who I intend to be and receiving what I intend to receive.
Am I playing the role of that person or am I Becoming the Character?
Welcome back!
